A day in the future life of Jacqueline in 2025
Jacqueline (50) has been living in The district of the future for eight months and talks about the benefits of a circular water system.
“This time last year, I was still in my rented house elsewhere in Helmond. A nice neighborhood, but unbearably hot in the summer. Not only was the rented house there poorly insulated, it was also extremely hot outside on the square. The little greenery in the neighborhood provided only limited shade. Not to mention the flooding in the streets after a heavy summer rain. Here in our green neighborhood, the beautiful planting means we suffer little from the heat and put excess rainwater to good use.
Reusing rainwater
This morning, I watered my garden with recycled rainwater, which is collected in a tank for our neighborhood. The rainwater stored in there is brought to our homes via a treatment plant. In the evening, I check in the app how much I have consumed. Because I feel responsible for the planet as well as for my own wallet, I am involved in this a lot. I go to residents’ meetings and contribute ideas. Is there not enough rainwater? Then we can flush our toilet with purified utility water. It looks like our washing machine will soon use this water too. Some households in our neighborhood save up to 70 per cent water. Great, don’t you think?
Preventing heat stress
The beauty of the water system in our neighborhood is that it can withstand drought and extreme precipitation. Due to the amount of greenery in the neighborhood, water is well absorbed by the soil. The shade from the trees then helps prevent heat stress.
Talking about greenery like this, it occurs to me that I would help the neighbor across the street maintain his green roof. He himself has mobility problems and through BrandevoorLAB I saw his call. Still nice how we not only help each other, but also the planet.”
