A day in the life of resident Evert (54). ‘Thursday morning, 7.30 am. I open the curtains of my home and see that the sun is shining. Great, because that means the solar panels on the roofs and in the facades are providing plenty of energy for the neighborhood. The various battery systems are slowly filling up. The electric cars on the mobility hubs are fully charging so that, even in the evening when the sun is no longer shining, together with the batteries, they can power the homes. Not only in the neighborhood itself, but also the regional grid. That generates money for us, more than recouping the costs of our energy system.

Saving energy

As a resident, it’s very satisfying to see how all this works via the app on my phone. At any time of the day, I can see what my home is generating and consuming, and I can influence it myself by smartly controlling my home appliances. On a day like today, when the sun is shining and energy is abundant, I run all the appliances. Additional benefit of the app? I can see how much money I save and earn per year by smartly controlling my energy consumption and selling my excess electricity.

BSD Energy

I am a very conscious energy user and like to share my knowledge about our energy system with the new residents of the district. This is why I volunteer at a foundation dedicated to renewable energy, which operates the energy cooperative we established with all residents in the neighborhood. Implementation is in the hands of a combination of innovative companies. This is great because this way we not only have the control, but also the up-to-date knowledge to properly maintain and continuously improve the system. It’s also wonderful to know that that many people from the knowledge institutes are active in the district to learn from our system. We ultimately reap the benefits from this. Thus, our system has already become much more effective in recent years, leaving us with even more to gain from our energy trade with the rest of the region! In short: by living in this neighborhood developed by Brainport Smart District, I am doing my bit for energy transition and I am completely ready for the future. And that feels good!
