Social and sustainable 

The scoop for the temporary homes in Brainport Smart District is for mHome. This Nijmegen developer will start installing 52 temporary homes at the end of 2021. Building with fixed blocks

The mHomes are modular and easy to connect to each other. “You can compare the mHomes with Lego bricks. We combine a high degree of standardization with flexibility and creativity. By cleverly combining the “Lego blocks”, there are a surprising number of possibilities. But because we always use the same blocks, it remains affordable,” says Bernd Hendriksen, project leader of mHome.

Durable

The homes of mHome are made of mainly circular and post-growth ecological (bio-based) building materials. In addition, the mHomes are easily reusable and repositionable. For example, from visitor center to housing or from homes to an office.

Stacked construction

In BSD come 52 mHomes. These are placed stacked ranging from 1, 2 and 3 high. The result is a playful whole. There is plenty of space around the houses for communal greenery and a pond. for example, a communal green(t)e garden.

Affordable and inclusive

These first temporary homes in BSD are medium-priced rental homes and homes for social housing. Six homes are rented out to ORO clients. In this way, mHome contributes to BSD’s ambition to become a neighborhood for everyone. The other 46 homes are in the social rent and affordable rent price range.

Do you want to live in a mHome?

mHome does not just want to offer a home, but also wants to build the living environment together with the future residents. The Participation program line is therefore one of the program lines in which mHome aims to excel. For example, mHome wants to work on a community and, for example, give substance to the communal (outdoor) spaces together with residents. After the summer of 2021, this participation process will be further elaborated by the mHome team together with Twinstone and BSD. The recruitment of residents will then start in the fall. Innovation, collaboration and sustainability are key in the ambitions of the Brainport region. That is why Wij zijn IN wants to develop the living concept for BSD together, in which the starting principles are technology, data and focus on the future.

From the start the (future) residents will be involved in the design and in the decision-making on BSD and the use of new technology. Residents are actively involved in and jointly responsible for their own environment.

Circular mixed sustainable district

The DGVGroupconsortium contributes with a sustainable smart circular district integrated in a high-quality landscape and in food-providing nature.

The district is designed in order to make optimum use of natural conditions, such as solar rotation in summer and winter, wind directions, north and south side of the home, soil condition, etc. Through smart design and process management an optimum combination of lowtech and hightech solutions is created: with the best from the past, the comfort of the present and readiness for the future.

Disruptive project development, sustainable architecture, choice of materials, circular design of infrastructure, energy balancing, use of water, local food production and circular use of (organic) waste. The DGVGroup team has developed these for ReGen Villages and other projects. The district we will be building in Brainport Smart District is energy-generating, reduces the CO2 footprint and contributes to the health and welfare of its residents. We will create jointly with the residents and collaboration partners ‘the Blossom of Brainport’, a circular integrated district with functions for food production, water purification and circular infrastructure that extend beyond the area itself.

The greenhouse homes of CC-Studio

KasCo is a circular residential area in which food, energy and living go hand in hand. Here, you can live in a low-energy home in a greenhouse with fresh fruit and vegetable just outside your door.

The frame of the greenhouse home is made of wood and can be taken apart. Separating the bearing frame and the inside layout makes the house extremely adaptive. This allows residents to create a unique, personalised home within the uniform shell.

The wind and waterproof shell offers many additional benefits: breathing outer walls, ample outside space in the greenhouse and integration of plants (urban farming). And the concept is already a reality: the first KasCo has been built in Amsterdam.

Embedded Fitness develops interactive exercise concepts. The company connects sensors and communication technology to fitness equipment so people are challenged to get fit in a fun way.

In BSD, Embedded Fitness focuses on developing a Smartwalk route lined with SmartStones (posts with beacons inside) that can connect to a smartphone, so that users can walk a particular route through the district. The posts give feedback with LEDs to users that have selected a game or exercise on their app.

The posts work with low-power components and can be charged with solar cells, so that the system is energy-neutral.

Embedded Fitness has been recognised nationally as a SportInnovator centre for Bewegen in het Onderwijs (Exercise In Education). The centre acts as a breeding ground for knowledge institutions, businesses, authorities and schools, in order to contribute positively with evidence-based technological innovations to sports participation to increasing enjoyment of exercising, and to improving the learning performance of young people.

There must be a mix of beauty, data and clever use of space, linking city, building and humans. This is what Solarix does. We transform solar energy into design, give buildings an identity and create value for the environment.

Solarix believes in a future in which all outer walls generate energy. That is why Solarix develops beautiful, sustainable, innovative and multifunctional walls.

Solarix is a wall system that minimises depletion of natural resources (sustainable materials and lighting, recyclable) and maximises potential (sustainable energy, data). In fact it is more than just a wall system: it is about designing technology and the energy transition in a way that is attractive for people – it’s an example of a dynamic urban development.

Experience Brainport Smart District with the Digital Twin

Geodan has built a ‘Digital Twin’ of Brainport Smart District, an identical digital copy of reality.

When you make a virtual visit, you can see how the new district is going to look and truly experience and understand it. Smart 3D models based on a range of data give visitors a realistic look into the impact of the plans for the future.

Where do you position solar panels, rows of houses and cycle lanes? The Digital Twin makes ‘the District of the Future’ that BSD now still is, truly concrete.

Using the Digital Twin is a perfect example of how data is used in BSD. Geodan believes that linking data from the physical living environment to how residents experience it is crucial in order to make good choices in the layout of this environment.

In modern society contemporary businesses are expected to contribute to increasing sustainability. LIC helps its customers to do this all over the world, with tailored sustainable solutions in LED lighting, building automation and sustainable energy solutions.

Lighting: the linking pin for information

The street lighting is managed using the Smart City Control System with which the complete lighting grid can be controlled with a simple click from anywhere in the world.

This system makes it possible to constantly monitor street lighting, obtain operational data in real time, and to decide flexibly for every unit when, where and how much lighting should be switched on, switched off or dimmed. In addition, the street lights can be equipped with a wide range of sensors to gather other types of information, such as air quality, danger, temperature, particulate matter, CO2 level, etcetera.

This will change a lighting system into a new global network, in which the lights become intelligent data carriers that can be used to activate various services to improve liveability and make the city smart, safe and sustainable.

The urban vision developed by UNStudio features a number of strips running from north to south that divide the area into several zones, each with a different building density. Shared facilities can be created in the district, such as kitchens, gardens, reading rooms and gyms. There will also be a mix of residential and work, with decentralised business space with offices and shared work spaces aimed at innovative collaborations. In the heart of the district will be a park of some 12 hectares with gardens, natural landscape and sports grounds. The park will be collectively owned by the users: everybody can become a member. At the fringes of the districts there will be 80 hectares for growing food (high-tech agriculture), water storage, nature and energy generation. Living in a learning city

Big data is big business. Businesses use personal data for profit, often without citizens’ knowledge. We want to change this. This project aims to study and develop new models in which the actual residents of the district rather than big business can profit from data. What if data were to be used for the good of the community?

UNSense wants to set the next step in planning and opinion forming on smart cities, and explore what a smart city, with all its processes and information, might actually look like.  For this, it introduces as part of Brainport Smart District a real life test environment of 100 homes consisting of a cross-section of society ranging from single householders to families and from young to old. In this district we will study together with the residents how data can be used to improve the living environment and people’s welfare in cities in psychological, physical, social and economic terms.
