Principle; the basic idea is known. This is where we transition from scientific research to applied research. The principle is being explored further in a study.
The technological concept has been formulated. The research has been applied and focused on the specific product.
Proof-of-concept. This is where the technical feasibility is demonstrated, e.g. in simulations.
Implementation and testing of a prototype (possible still a component and/or a partial system) in a laboratory environment.
Validation of a prototype of the (complete) system in a representative environment.
Model or prototype of the complete system is demonstrated in a relevant end-to-end environment. Technical feasibility is demonstrated in a concrete product.
Prototype demonstration in an operational environment. Virtually all functions are present for demonstration and testing. The system has already partially been documented.
The system/product is complete and qualified by means of a test and demonstration in an operational environment. Full functionality has been tested in simulated and operational scenarios.
